Fromly 2.0

Why we moved from canvas to chat

After months polishing an infinite canvas, we changed Fromly's front door. Here's what we learned.

If you've used Fromly in the past few weeks, the first thing you see when you open it is no longer an infinite canvas. It's a chat. You type what you need and Fromly responds, creates the task, finds the note. This change wasn't a design whim — it was the conclusion of months watching how people actually used the canvas.

The canvas was powerful, but it had a cost

Fromly's infinite canvas was always one of its most-loved pieces: drawing, pinning notes, tables and calendars on the same plane, zooming from the big picture down to detail. It didn't disappear — it went from being the entry screen to being just another element type, one you create when you need it ("+ Canvas" in the chat header) for visual planning, brainstorming or project maps, without having to live there all the time.

But we noticed a pattern: most of the time someone opened Fromly, they didn't want to organize anything. They wanted to say something — "I need to call a client on Thursday", "summarize what we discussed yesterday", "where did I write down that quote?" — and have Fromly handle it. The canvas, for all its potential, stood between that need and the answer: you had to find the right place, the right node, the right view.

The question that made us change course: if 80% of the time you just want to say something and have it resolved, why is step one always "find where"?

What Fromly 2.0 looks like in practice

Fromly 2.0 now opens directly into three columns:

When you upload a file to a conversation, Fromly indexes it: you can ask about its content at any later point, not just right after uploading. And PDFs open with a real viewer — you can highlight text directly on the page and crop any region as an image.

The canvas isn't going anywhere

This isn't a forced migration. The data model is exactly the same — nodes, tasks, contexts, resources — so nothing you already had moves or gets reorganized. The only thing that changed is the front door. If tomorrow you need the canvas back to visually plan a big project, it's still there, with all your content intact.

What this means if you were already using Fromly

If you've been using Fromly since before July 2026, you'll notice the change as soon as you open it: the app now greets you with a blank chat instead of your context canvas. The first time, you'll also see a short guided tour explaining the new pieces — sidebar, chat, right column — which you can skip if it's already familiar.

There's no rush or obligation to change your workflow overnight — just the option to try a more direct way of telling Fromly what you need. And if you ever miss visually planning a big project, the canvas is still there, one click away, with all your content intact.
